Sarah Velvet Brown comes unwillingly from Arizona to live with her British aunt Velvet Brown after her parents are killed in a car crash. Velvet was once famous for winning the Grand National race although she was disqualified because girls were not allowed to be jockeys at that time. Sarah hates Britain, hates school, hates everything. Velvet still has her elderly stallion The Pie and when his last foal is born to a nearby farmer’s mare, Sarah falls in love. She daydreams of the colt and earns money to buy him, including writing stories for Velvet’s author boyfriend to use as inspiration.
Eventually Sarah gets her wish and trains Arizona Pie to be a three-day-event horse…
